Small Business Marketing - Customer List

 Build Up Your Customer List

Always collect their names, emails, and other contact information from your customers.

How will you stay in contact with your customers if you don’t collect your information? And if you do ask for their contact details on your sales slips and invoices, be sure you are using them!

And if you are wondering how you collect them it is as simple as asking them for it. This is best done during your customers’ purchasing process by asking them to fill out a form with their details. There are many successful companies who did this for years and would mail you catalogs in the mail.

Don’t you remember getting them? And when you received these catalogs you would find a comfortable place to relax with pen in hand checking off or earmarking the items you would later order. This enabled these companies to make more money from their customers.

Another way to get your customers to give you their contact information is by having a monthly drawing in which a prize will be given. It will amaze you how many names you could collect by doing this.

Let’s say you own a restaurant, you can offer a free dessert to everyone who drops their business card into a fish bowl. It’s not impossible to collect over 1000 names over the course of a month. How much will a dessert cost? $2 - $3, if that much. If all business owners were to implement this marketing strategy alone, they would be protecting their businesses in the face of stiff competition. They could send out snail mail to their customers with special offers on slow nights and watch them come flocking in.

This can also be done with emails and faxes. You want to generate more business? No problem. Send out a special promotion.

Freelance Web Design

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Web design can be fairly expensive in Europe and the US and starting off with a website that your local designer has created is often not the always the best approach. Especially if you are planing to make money with your website and have little funds available to start your business.

There are thousands of good freelancers that can do the job in good quality at a 1/3 of the price. Many freelancers are Indian nationals and with a very low hourly or per project rate they truly can design nice websites at reasonable prices.

I have however made the experience that people are going back to the US and European freelancers or companies as the communication skills and general understanding can be very difficult and frustrating at times. Working with Indian freelancers does require detailed step by step instructions if you want the job done well.

Several providers offer a portal where buyers and providers can meet. Pricing for all jobs is done on a bid basis. Indian suppliers dominate these portals as they are willing to under price jobs to such an extent that EU and US suppliers can’t keep up due to their overhead costs.

GetFreelancer is the best choice if you are looking for a freelance designer and also probably the best place to start your new “career” as a designer. Scriptlance is another portal but not as large as GetFreelance but a good alternative.

Use these portals with caution as you might not always get exactly what you want. Surely the money is safe due to Escrow but having your money stuck in Escrow for a year can be just as bad as loosing it.

Bad neighbourhood - Link building

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

To simplify the definition. Bad Neighbourhood’s are commonly a network of domains that consist of a high amount of banned or penalized websites linking to each other. Banning or penalizing can have various reasons such as link scheming, publishing offensive materials, spyware, spam, malware, phishing or other illegal activities. Having a number of links from any such network can give Google the impression that your domain is a part of this network and this could lead to your site being penalized too.How can you identify such links :

1 . Try site: www.domain.com in Google search, if there are no pages in the Google index this is a warning.

2. Check whether the page rank in the Google toolbar is not 0 or grey, that is also a warning sign. New websites may also have this.

3. Check whether you can find info on the company name in Google search.

4. Check who is the owner of the domain and domain age. This will help you identify whether the page is new or possibly banned

5. As a final check you can use a great tool developed by Michael VanDeMar.

I checked one of my blogs with this tool and had some warnings of some Bad Neighbourhood links. I couldn’t figure out where these links had come from so I sent an e-mail to Micheal. Within a few minutes he sent me an answer that solved my problem. The links had in fact originated from one of my own websites. To take a shortcut I used a free Wordpress template that had a script with invisible links to 3 casino websites.

After Michael had sent me the code by e-mail I also used a tool to view the page as Google bot would and found following script hidden in my code :

Again I would like to thank Michael for his help, effort and quick response.
