Bad neighbourhood - Link building

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

To simplify the definition. Bad Neighbourhood’s are commonly a network of domains that consist of a high amount of banned or penalized websites linking to each other. Banning or penalizing can have various reasons such as link scheming, publishing offensive materials, spyware, spam, malware, phishing or other illegal activities. Having a number of links from any such network can give Google the impression that your domain is a part of this network and this could lead to your site being penalized too.How can you identify such links :

1 . Try site: www.domain.com in Google search, if there are no pages in the Google index this is a warning.

2. Check whether the page rank in the Google toolbar is not 0 or grey, that is also a warning sign. New websites may also have this.

3. Check whether you can find info on the company name in Google search.

4. Check who is the owner of the domain and domain age. This will help you identify whether the page is new or possibly banned

5. As a final check you can use a great tool developed by Michael VanDeMar.

I checked one of my blogs with this tool and had some warnings of some Bad Neighbourhood links. I couldn’t figure out where these links had come from so I sent an e-mail to Micheal. Within a few minutes he sent me an answer that solved my problem. The links had in fact originated from one of my own websites. To take a shortcut I used a free Wordpress template that had a script with invisible links to 3 casino websites.

After Michael had sent me the code by e-mail I also used a tool to view the page as Google bot would and found following script hidden in my code :

Again I would like to thank Michael for his help, effort and quick response.
