How do I get more traffic to my blog ?
Have you been searching for ways to get more traffic to your blog ? There are many blogs that are posting information about this topic, but the information isn’t worth a cent. Have any of you seen a blog with zero pagerank that is successful simply because of good contents ? Well, I have not !
If you want your blog and postings to be positioned highly in search engines so that potential readers find these then link building and onsite seo are more important than anything else. By using an seo plugin you will be able to manually change the title and description tags, more important obviously the title. This will take care of your onsite seo. Now you need offsite seo such as link building.
I have sourced a list of 56 things you need to consider to get traffic to your blog, a list I found on roughly 20 well known blogs ! I think that only a small number of these will actually help you but none of them will get traffic to your blog :
1. Use lists. What lists are these guys talking about ??
2. Be topical… write posts that need to be read right now. Unless you are blogging about the weather I don’t believe any post is an immediate must.
3. Learn enough to become the expert in your field. It will surely help to be an expert in the field.
4. Break news. Have not come across many blogs that actually break news !
5. Be timeless… write posts that will be readable in a year. Now thats a tough one, with a fast changing world how will you manage this one unless you are a fortune teller…
6. Be among the first with a great blog on your topic, then encourage others to blog on the same topic. To be the first for any topic is close to impossible and the chance of being an expert and the first for a specific topic that a large number of people will like to read sounds easy doesn’t it ?
7. Share your expertise generously so people recognize it and depend on you. Sounds reasonable !
8. Announce news. Would be great to announce news but in most cases this will not be possible, others are faster as they have the setup.
9. Write short, pithy posts. In position 12 you are told to write long posts. Hmmm ?
10. Encourage your readers to help you manipulate the technorati top blog list. Tell me how you want to do this !
11. Don’t write about your cat, your boyfriend or your kids. That depends who your boyfriend and kids are, might get you lots of traffic if your daughter is Paris Hilton. If you call your cat pussy instead of ginger you might get hits like crazy.
12. Write long, definitive posts. I was under the impression you said short posts ?
13. Write about your kids. Now wait you specifically said not about kids and cat ?
14. Be snarky. Write nearly libelous things about fellow bloggers, daring them to respond (with links back to you) on their blog. If your blog cannot be found how will fellow bloggers… come on !
15. Be sycophantic. Share linklove and expect some back. No one likes linking back thats a fact !
16. Include polls, meters and other eye candy. Will not get you readers…
17. Tag your posts. Use del.ico.us. Social bookmarking will not get you much traffic…
18. Coin a term or two. What !?
19. Do email interviews with the well-known. Now you are being rediculous !
20. Answer your email. If you get any !
21. Use photos. Salacious ones are best. Probably a good point using photos, make sure they not copyright of someone else !
22. Be anonymous. Doubt this will help
23. Encourage your readers to digg your posts. (and to use furl and reddit). Do it with every post. No comment on this one
24. Post your photos on flickr. May help a little.
25. Encourage your readers to subscribe by RSS. If you had readers or traffic !!!
26. Start at the beginning and take your readers through a months-long education. OK
27. Include comments so your blog becomes a virtual water cooler that feeds itself. Does this generate traffic ? I was under the impression you need traffic to get comments !
28. Assume that every day is the beginning, because you always have new readers. A dream come true !
29. Highlight your best posts on your Squidoo lens. How do you know which your best posts are, you will probably think they are all good right ?
30. Point to useful but little-known resources. That would help if you know of resources that are useful and no one else knows of these. Very unlikely ! Will this generate traffic ? No ! If you have traffic your readers will surely like the info.
31. Write about stuff that appeals to the majority of current blog readers-like gadgets and web 2.0. I was under the impression we should write about a topic that is timeless and that is within our expertise ?
32. Write about Google. No comment. We are all Google experts and we all have breaking news about Google right ?
33. Have relevant ads that are even better than your content. Sorry but I must doubt that ads will lead to traffic and reader loyalty. You will most likely need traffic to get clicks on your ads but not the other way around !
34. Don’t include comments, people will cross post their responses. Didn’t you say comments are the virtual water cooler lol
35. Write posts that each include dozens of trackbacks to dozens of blog posts so that people will notice you. No comment, I am speechless
36. Run no ads. Wasn’t the suggestion to run ads that are better than the actual posts ???
37. Keep tweaking your template to make it include every conceivable bell or whistle. Has been mentioned why mention it again !
38. Write about blogging. And what if blogging isn’t the topic of my blog ??
39. Digest the good ideas of other people, all day, every day. All day and every day. Would leave you with loads of time to run your blog right ?
40. Invent a whole new kind of art or interaction. No time left to invent after digesting so many good ideas as suggested in pos. 39 !
41. Post on weekdays, because there are more readers. OK, sure about that ? Would it not be better to post every day and even better several times a day ?
42. Write about a never-ending parade of different topics so you don’t bore your readers. Sound great ! But somewhere in this list you mention, I quote “Write about only one thing, in ever-deepening detail…”
43. Post on weekends, because there are fewer new posts. I knew it ! pos 41 + 43 = every day
44. Don’t interrupt your writing with a lot of links. Are trackbacks also links by any chance ? lol
45. Dress your blog (fonts and design) as well as you would dress yourself for a meeting with a stranger. First really good point, good work !
46. Edit yourself. Ruthlessly. Will that really lead to traffic ? I was always under the impression that traffic will lead to comments and those you can edit.
47. Don’t promote yourself and your business or your books or your projects at the expense of the reader’s attention. I agree but for a professional blogger that might be the only reason for blogging
48. Be patient. YES this is the best advice so far
49. Give credit to those that inspired, it makes your writing more useful. Hmmmm, will this get you traffic, wrong cat….
50. Ping technorati. Or have someone smarter than me tell you how to do it automatically. Smarter than you is a good point again ! WP does that automatically
51. Write about only one thing, in ever-deepening detail, so you become definitive. Might run out of material to post within a week
52. Write in English. Don’t try this one if you want Japanese readers.
53. Better, write in Chinese. Thats bullshit, doubt that all those farmers out there will read your blog. Havn’t been to China lately have we ? Currently there are surely more internet users that can speak English than Chinese. Just because there are so many Chinese does not always make it a better market does it ?
54. Write about obscure stuff that appeals to an obsessed minority. OK sounds reasonable ! But would that not limit your traffic ?
55. Don’t be boring. Why mention things 2 times, helps get this list nice and long doesn’t it
56. Write stuff that people want to read and share. Mentioned this one already
If you look at this great list and work by it you will be back to square 1, how do I get traffic to my blog !
I think we can squeeze this all :
1.) Create a nice looking blog.
2.) Post good information on a daily basis.
3.) Get yourself as many strong backlinks as you can. Gain PR so you SERP’s improve. Link exchange, one way links, directories what ever…
4.) Comment on other blogs that have same topic and rank well in search engines, and mention what good information your blog offers to the reader.
5.) Don’t give up, keep on posting and promoting.
6.) Oh ! And don’t forget to download the seo plugin I have posted for download on this blog. Onsite optimization is very important, successful blogging without it is simply not possible.
I believe that covers the basics of how to get traffic to your blog.
